The Britannia Inn Pub Stopover

Is the Britannia Inn the Best Pub Stopover?

Navigating from the Plymouth area, the drive to the Britannia Inn was uneventful. Roads are good, and there is no toll on the Tamar Bridge going west. Our approach was made from the A390 through some lovely villages and around Par itself. For a change the sun was actually out and it felt like this stopover was going to be lovely.

As Ann and I turned into the pub car park, I thought this was going to be tight. The car park was full, must be a good place to eat. A sharp left turn followed immediately by a sharp right then straight on between rows of parked cars. Then at the far end a right turn again, and to my surprise through an open gate into the camping field.

The Field

The field is huge; there are about twelve motorhomes already parked up. I pick a spot facing towards the pub. The pitch, as it is actually just a spot in the large field, is level, and no ramps are required. Other vans are parked around the perimeter. To the west, there is a tree-lined edge. To the south, the same but more hedges and a few trees. To the north and east are the pub buildings and beer garden.

Facilities

There are toilets, a water station and an Elsan emptying facility, the toilets are to the north of the field. There is also a seating area with a pergola. The site is fantastic, it feels like a campsite rather than a pub stopover. In the centre of the field are football goals for those who feel energetic enough to play.

The Pub

The pub itself was professionally run, the beer garden was a delight, and there was a children’s play area with a wooden fort and swings. There were lots of outside tables set in a delightful grass area, some of which were covered and others had an sun umbrella for those hot summer days.

The menu was interesting, and Ann and I both ate fish and chips. It was the best fish and chips we’ve eaten. Perfect batter, lovely chips. Simply delicious.

Conclusion

The Britannia Inn is the best pub stopover Ann and I have visited. The grounds were lovely, and the food and drink was great. The staff was professional and helpful. You can head down there and see for yourself.
