What about real-term use? Well, I’ve been using the Garmin Camper 890MT-S for a year now, and it has been pretty good. One feature that is not named in any review is the ability to detach the screen unit from the mount by simply pulling it off. You see it is mounted via a magnet, and you click it into the mount. To detach, pull, and hey presto, there it is, ready to be taken home. You can do all your planning at home; you can even charge it with a USB C charger. The Camper 890MT-S also has voice control, making it a hands-free device.
The not-so-good: The hands-free phone feature is a little too delicate; I have hearing aids, so it is very hard for me to hear the caller when using the hands-free feature. This is even with the volume turned all the way up. This may not be an issue for you at all.
Only once did the Camper 890MT-S send me down a very narrow lane. My wife and I travelled to Dulverton to the Caravan and Motorhome Club Site. About twenty miles out, the unit reported there were traffic problems on the route, and it was redirecting me. I did not think anything of it and just followed its directions.
The road went into a single-track lane that got narrower and narrower until coming down a steep decline, I had to pull the mirrors in to stop them from hitting the hedge on either side. We joined the main road again at the end of the decline and arrived at the campsite. Speaking with the manager, she asked me if I had read the site approach warning on the booking confirmation. I said no, I did not. She then explained that the road into Dulverton was always closed between 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM, and it is best to find a layby and have a cup of tea, then come on in after 3:30 PM.
So, it seems this little incident could have been avoided if I had read the instructions that were issued to me. I cannot blame the Camper 890MT-S unit for this as I insisted (by pressing the OK key when it asked me if I wanted to use the route it had found) on continuing my journey. The Camper 890MT-S had found a tight route but still got us there safely. One thought, though, was that we did not encounter any traffic coming the other way. This would have made the whole approach more interesting.
